Chunky necklaces are a style statement that are always on trend, chunky necklaces aren’t just a piece of jewellery to wear on a special night out or an occasion, chunky necklaces can be worn every day to transform your look. As Iris Apfel quotes “I think jewelry can change an outfit more than anything else. Transformation, punch, individuality: One or all of the above are why you should wear jewelry.” A style icon and as quoted by herself a ‘geriatric starlet’ she is always seen stacking bright colours and unusual pieces together to create her quirky individual look.

Individuality in fashion and in particularly with jewellery is so important, another famous Iris quote says “What’s my style is not your style” and quite rightly so, jewellery and chunky necklaces in particular can be so varied and so unique to your tastes and it is that preference that can make you stylish and iconic. It is not just wearing an expensive collar necklace, or a necklace adorned with gemstones and gold glimmer but finding costume or fashion pieces and putting them together. Whether that be a mix of silver and gold plated or rose gold, pearl or enamel, whatever catches your eye or whatever makes your outfit pop then you know it’s the one for you. Here at DEMI+CO we have put together five of our favourite chunky necklaces, gold chunky necklace and silver necklaces that would all look fabulous teamed with evening wear, day dresses or just with a simple shirt and jeans.

Mixing metals our handy step-by-step guide

  • Step 1 - wear similar thickness styles together for example thin and light gold and silver pieces look stunning together. A chunky gold necklace would perhaps look better as a stand-alone piece but then a thick gold bracelet would look fine with a chunky silver bracelet. Mix and match your style and don’t forget that the simpler the colour of your outfit the more you can add to it with accessories.
  • Step 2 – don’t over mix your metals for the evening, daytime always tends to allow for a bit more fun. Evenings, important occasions and where a more formal look is required would look better with one type of metal of your choice
  • Step 3 - You should mix colours but don’t mix styles for example an elegant rose gold necklace looks lovely paired with a simple silver chain, or a silver charm bracelet looks fun paired with rose gold charms.
  • Step 4 - don’t mix vintage with heavily modern pieces e.g. vintage drop earrings would not look right with a punk style ear cuff, pooling different styles and eras is a no go.
  • Step 5 - keep to a two-metal type limit, either silver and gold or silver and rose gold. Gold and rose gold is very similar and in some instances it could work but the similarity also means that it has the potential to clash. Ideally choose one piece that is combined mix of the two different metal tones - this will take the edge of your layering and make the overall look more seamless and effortless.
  • Step 6 – go with different lengths for some necklace creativity, this not only gives each piece a chance to shine but it also looks more stylish and elegant. For the ears go for gold hoops mixed with studs in second piercings or mini hoops and a dangle earring for the main piercing. With bangles mix chunky bangles with medium sized ones or mix and match the same thickness with silver and gold. Go with what feels right and what looks good.

The do’s and don’ts of buying jewellery for a friend

Do buy jewellery for a friend that you have known for a while, especially if you have shared a few moments, gone shopping together and really do know each other inside out. She may have even hinted in the past about which pieces of jewellery that she has liked or perhaps she has borrowed some jewellery from you – these indicators will help you to know exactly the type of jewellery she will like e.g. gold hoops, chunky necklaces, rose gold jewellery or cuff bracelets.

Don’t impulse buy jewellery for a friend, spend the time to really think about your friend, her likes, her dislikes, what she has worn in the past, her style, her interests and passions. For example is she an introvert or an extrovert as that will determine whether she would like more elegant pieces or more statement jewellery? Does she love the latest trends, or does she prefer classic and more timeless pieces? Ensure you have thought long and hard and then when you do buy jewellery for her you know it will be something she loves and something that she will cherish forever.

Do think about your friends’ style and try not to buy something you would like, maybe buy two things instead, a gift for you and a gift for her (something that she likes and would suit her).

Don’t buy her a jewellery gift if you have had a fight, this will only remind her of the fight you had and it will have negative connotations. Do buy her a jewellery gift to mark an anniversary, or to remind her of happy moments such as a girl’s holiday you took.

Don’t buy something that is too expensive like designer jewellery she may feel worse of it is something too extravagant for her to reciprocate if she felt so inclined.

Do buy sentimental costume jewellery, maybe gold plated or rose gold, on trend costume jewellery that we sell is made with the highest of quality and will last a long time.

Copper magnetic bracelets guide

When we first started DEMI+CO our first few magnetic bracelets were all copper, we never realised the popularity of copper bracelets and copper magnetic bracelets till our first few orders were made and then they just took off. Since then, we have continued to add to our copper magnetic bracelet collection making it one our largest magnetic bracelet collection to date. The dual benefits of copper and magnets is what makes the bracelets appealing as well as the aesthetic rose coloured hue of copper which gives it its warmth and shine. Recent requests of copper bracelets without magnets have resulted in us also adding a no magnets range too.

We have covered stainless steel as a topic many a times over the years with a number of blog posts, we do get a lot of customer questions and feedback over our stainless steel bracelets. Stainless steel is an incredibly versatile metal. Majority of our customers prefer stainless steel magnetic bracelets over any other metal. Stainless steel has so many benefits and is a classic all-rounder when it comes to mens stainless steel bracelets and womens stainless steel bracelets.
