9ct gold hoop earrings

Here at DEMI+CO our collection now includes fine jewellery with the likes of real gold, sterling silver, white gold and diamond pieces. As experts in precious metals and gems we have put together a guide specifically on gold carat and gold plating, plus we have included our most frequently asked questions of real gold hoop earrings and gold earrings too.

9 carat gold

Has 37.5% pure gold and has a warm yellow colour, it is more affordable compared to 14, 18 ,22 and 24 carat gold. It is actually one of the strongest of all the other types of gold as it has a mix of other metals making it more robust and resilient ideal for everyday jewellery and earrings.

14 carat gold

This type of gold contains 58.5% pure gold, it has a slightly stronger deeper yellow colour and is still an affordable option. 14 carat gold is still a strong and solid metal making it a good choice for jewellery and gold earrings.

18 carat gold

18 carat gold contains 75% gold, the other percent is made up of durable metals to add solidity and resilience. 18 carat gold is a much stronger and warmer gold in colour as it has a higher percentage of gold compared to 14 and 9 carat and that is also reflected in the price. 18 carat white gold is mixed with metals to give the 75% gold a whiter colour e.g. rhodium. Copper is added to the 75% gold to create rose gold.

22 carat gold

This entails around 91.6% gold and has a price tag to match, this type of gold is soft so care has to be taken in looking after and storing the items. This type of gold is not ideal for stone set jewellery, it is more suitable for wedding bands or simple gold earrings.

24 carat gold

The priciest and the purest form there is, consisting of 99.9% of gold it is very yellow and very soft and bendy. This type of gold is not used to make intricate or fine jewellery. It is used for more simpler shapes and gold earrings.

What is the difference between 9ct gold and 18ct yellow gold?

9ct yellow gold is the lowest that can be termed gold in the UK. 9ct gold is 37.5% pure gold, with other metals making up the other 62.5%. 18ct yellow gold is often used as a happy medium between the pleasant colour and status of 22ct, and the durability of 9ct.

Is 9ct worth buying?

Yes, 9ct gold is worth buying as gold always retains its value. Although 9ct is the lowest grading of gold, the fact that it is mixed with other metals means that it will stand the test of time.

Can earring holes close up?

This depends on how long it has been since your ears were last pierced. If you it has been a week or two or earlier since your piercing it is best to keep earrings in regularly to keep the holes open. Earring holes usually stay open for at least a day or two once a few months have passed after the original piercing. The holes often stay open for a few weeks or longer if they have been there for several years of earring use.
