History of the hoop earring

  • The gold hoop earring has been a powerful symbol in numerous cultures throughout history.
  • Both men and women have been adorning their bodies with jewelry since the earliest days of civilization.
  • The oldest earrings archaeologists have discovered belong to Sumerian women who lived in 2500 BC, and favoured the now classic, gold hoop style.
  • Julius Caesar turned earrings into a status symbol during his reign over Rome.
  • During the golden age of piracy in the years between 1650 and 1730, pirates were known to wear earrings in order to secure a proper burial, should they drown, and their bodies wash ashore.
  • In 19th century Japan, it was tradition for both Ainu men and women to wear brass hoop earrings.
  • More recently in the 1980s and 1990s, hoop earrings have been associated with ‘Cholas,’ a subculture that emerged in working class Mexican neighbourhoods in Southern California
  • They have also played an essential part of other working-class Latin and black communities
  • In recent years the gold hoop earring has still remained its popularity and despite the modern times the design of the hoop has barely altered.
  • The gold hoop earring fits in to so many different cultures, subcultures and histories from Mexican, African, Indian and Ancient Egyptian that it is the most timeless and iconic piece of jewellery
  • The interest in large gold hoops was part of the trend for what was then known as “ethnic” fashion, this was essentially styles that borrowed from cultures that were described as “exotic” or “colourful.” This language has, for the most part, been shelved.
  • The gold hoop is no longer considered ethnic it is applicable for so many cultures, sub cultures and backgrounds
  • The style and feel of the hoop has not changed over centuries and yet it popularity remains with modern culture like hip hop, skate and surf cultures to goth and indie culture.

Since then, we have continued to add to our copper magnetic bracelet collection making it one our largest magnetic bracelet collection to date. The dual benefits of copper and magnets is what makes the bracelets appealing as well as the aesthetic rose coloured hue of copper which gives it its warmth and shine. Recent requests of copper bracelets without magnets have resulted in us also adding a no magnets range too.
